Thinking about Invisalign® to straighten your teeth? You’re not alone. We talk with patients every week who are curious about clear aligners and how the process works—and we love helping them feel informed and confident in their decision.
Whether you’re just starting to explore your options or you’ve already met with us for a consultation, this FAQ-style guide covers some of the most common Invisalign® questions we hear in our Long Beach office.
10 QUESTIONS PATIENTS ASK ABOUT INVISALIGN®
1. How does Invisalign® work?
Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made clear aligners that gradually shift your teeth into place. You wear each set for 1–2 weeks, and each set makes small adjustments until your teeth reach their ideal alignment.
2. What types of issues can Invisalign® treat?
Invisalign® is great for treating mild to moderate crowding, gaps, and bite issues like overbites, underbites, and crossbites. During your consultation, we’ll let you know if it’s a good fit for your specific needs.
3. How long does treatment take?
Most Invisalign® cases take between 12 and 18 months, but some can be shorter or longer depending on your smile goals and how consistently you wear the trays.
4. How many hours a day do I need to wear the aligners?
For best results, wear your aligners 20–22 hours a day. That means only taking them out to eat, drink anything besides water, brush, and floss.
5. Is Invisalign® uncomfortable?
You might feel some mild pressure or tightness when starting a new set of trays—that’s a sign they’re working! Most patients find Invisalign® more comfortable than braces, with no metal brackets or wires to worry about.
6. Will Invisalign® affect my speech?
Some patients notice a slight lisp when they first start wearing aligners, but it usually fades quickly as you adjust. For most people, it’s barely noticeable.
7. Can I eat or drink with the aligners in?
You’ll want to remove your aligners whenever you eat or drink anything other than water. Hot liquids can warp the plastic, and food can stain or damage the trays. Always brush your teeth before putting them back in.
8. How do I keep the aligners clean?
Rinse your aligners regularly and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap. Avoid toothpaste, which can scratch the plastic and cause cloudiness.
9. What happens if I lose an aligner?
Call us as soon as possible. We’ll let you know if you should move on to the next set or if we need to reorder the one you lost. Keeping your previous set handy just in case is always a good idea.
10. Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?
Yes. Once your Invisalign® treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear a retainer to maintain your results. We’ll provide a custom one for you and explain exactly how often to wear it based on your treatment plan.
