Once your porcelain inlay is in place, your tooth is stronger, protected, and beautifully restored. But to ensure long-lasting results and avoid future dental issues, it’s important to know what to expect after the procedure—and how to care for your tooth in the days and weeks that follow.

At Dr. Stephen Coates, DDS, we guide patients through every step of the restoration process, including what happens after the inlay is placed. Here’s how to support healing, minimize sensitivity, and keep your smile healthy.

5 AFTERCARE TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL INLAY RECOVERY

Proper care in the first few days sets the stage for a healthy, long-lasting result—and these simple habits will help protect your inlay for years to come:

  1. Watch for temporary sensitivity

It’s normal to feel some sensitivity to temperature or pressure after your appointment. This usually subsides within a few days as your tooth adjusts to the new restoration. If discomfort persists beyond a week, give our office a call.

  1. Avoid sticky or hard foods for the first 24 hours

While your porcelain inlay is permanently bonded, it’s best to treat the area gently right after the procedure. Avoid chewing on hard candies, ice, or anything sticky like caramel that could stress the restored tooth.

  1. Maintain consistent brushing and flossing

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Continue flossing daily, making sure to gently clean around the inlay to prevent bacteria or plaque from building up at the gumline.

  1. Skip whitening toothpastes on the inlay tooth

Whitening agents won’t affect porcelain—but they can be abrasive to surrounding enamel. Stick with a non-whitening, enamel-safe toothpaste to protect your natural teeth and your restoration.

  1. Protect your inlay from teeth grinding

If you tend to grind or clench your teeth (especially at night), consider wearing a custom nightguard. Grinding can damage both natural teeth and porcelain restorations over time.

SCHEDULE YOUR FOLLOW-UP AND HYGIENE VISITS

A porcelain inlay is strong, but it still needs routine maintenance just like your natural teeth. We recommend scheduling:

  • A follow-up examabout 1–2 weeks after placement to make sure the inlay fits perfectly
  • Regular cleanings and checkupsevery 6 months to keep your gums and surrounding teeth healthy
  • X-raysas needed to monitor the tooth underneath and ensure the restoration is stable

During these visits, we’ll assess your bite, polish your inlay, and check for signs of wear or decay. Preventive care is key to keeping your smile strong and pain-free.
