Choosing dentures—whether full or partial—is a big step toward restoring your smile and improving your quality of life. But with any dental treatment, patients naturally have questions. What will they feel like? How do you take care of them? Will they look natural?
Below are answers to the questions we hear most often from patients in our office, so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
7 QUESTIONS PATIENTS ASK ABOUT DENTURES AND PARTIALS
If you’re exploring your options or getting used to new dentures, these are some of the most helpful questions to understand upfront:
- What’s the difference between full dentures and partial dentures?
Full dentures replace all the teeth in your upper or lower arch, while partial dentures are used when some healthy natural teeth remain. Partials attach to existing teeth and fill in the gaps, often with a metal or acrylic framework.
- Will my dentures look natural?
Yes, when properly made and fitted. Today’s dentures are carefully designed to match your facial shape, gum color, and natural tooth shade—so they blend in seamlessly and restore your natural-looking smile.
- How long will my dentures last?
With proper care, most dentures last between 5 to 10 years. Over time, changes in your gums and jawbone may require adjustments or a replacement. Regular checkups help us monitor fit and function.
- Can I sleep in my dentures?
We recommend removing them at night to let your gum tissue rest and to avoid pressure sores. Soaking them overnight also helps keep them clean and in good shape.
- Do dentures affect how I eat or speak?
There may be a short adjustment period, but most patients adapt quickly. Start with soft foods, chew evenly, and speak aloud to speed up the transition. If discomfort persists, we’re happy to fine-tune the fit.
- How do I clean my dentures?
Brush them daily with a soft-bristled denture brush and non-abrasive cleanser. Rinse them after meals and soak them overnight. Be sure to also brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth daily.
- What if my dentures start to feel loose?
Call us. Dentures can shift over time due to natural changes in your mouth. We can reline or adjust them to improve comfort and function—and avoid irritation or rubbing.
Understanding how dentures fit into your daily routine can make the entire experience easier and more rewarding.
