It’s no secret that many kids seem to not like going to the dentist. The sound, the tools, the unfamiliar faces… it can be a lot for a child.

However, it is possible for your child to have a pleasant experience with the dentist, and you can even help them look forward to the next dental visit!

Here are a few of our tips for helping your child have a great visit the family dentist:

  1. Pick a dentist and dental office that you trust.
As an adult, it’s easy to simply find the closest dentist for your own visits, and then stick with that dentistry. However, take a little bit of time to find a dental office that not only you’d like to go to, but a place that you believe will be good for your child as well. Many offices are happy to show you and your family around their clinic so that you can get a good feel for the atmosphere there, and whether you think the dentist is good with kids or not.
  2. Ask yourself: Are you scared of going to the dentist, too?
Sometimes, our own fears get transferred to our children. If they see us comfortable with certain situations, they learn to not be scared of the same things. In other words, lead by example! Take your child along with you during your next dental cleaning and get them acclimated to the idea of a regular dental visit.
  3. Practice great oral hygiene at home.
The earlier you practice and preach regular, daily oral care at home, the more accustomed your child may be to the idea of going to the dentist. Talk to your child at home about the many ways we care for our teeth, and how regular cleanings at the dentist can help to fight cavities, remove unsightly plaque, and create beautiful smiles!
  4. Get books about children visiting the dentist.
There is a plethora of books available, even at the library, for parents who seek to educate their children about the importance of good oral health. A visual guide may help to prepare your child for their dental visit, and thus making the experience easier altogether.
