If some or all of your teeth have fallen out or have been removed, you’re probably using dentures or partial dentures to maintain a full beautiful smile and continue eating without impairment. It is important to note that dentures requires special care. We’ve put together a short and simple list to help you properly maintain your dentures or partial dentures. Don’t skip these easy steps to caring for your smile:

  1. Remove and rinse partials and full dentures after eating. Run under water to remove any food debris or other particles. You can also fill your sink with water and gently rinse with this method. Be careful to lay down a towel in case you drop them to minimize damage.
  2. Handle with care! Your dentures are delicate, so avoid bending or damaging the plastic or clasps while cleaning.
  3. Clean your mouth after removing partials or dentures. For your natural teeth, use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use the soft toothbrush or even gauze to go over your tongue, the inside of your cheeks, and the roof of your mouth.
  4. Brush daily! Be sure to clean and brush your partial dentures or dentures every day. You can soak them and brush with nonabrasive denture cleanser to remove plaque, food, and other particles. If you utilize denture adhesive, take care to clean out the grooves that sit against your gums to clear away any remaining adhesive. Never use denture cleansers inside your mouth.
  5. Soak partial dentures or dentures overnight. Most types need to stay moist to retain shape, so place them in water or a mild denture soaker overnight. Check with your dentist for instructions on how to properly store your dentures overnight, since this procedure could differ from denture to denture.
  6. Always rinse dentures and partial dentures before using them. This is especially important if you use a denture soaker! These solutions are not ingestible, so be sure to rinse your dentures and partial dentures before putting them back in your mouth.

It’s also important to schedule regular checkups with your dentist so that they can help you maintain your temporary teeth. Your dentist will make sure that they always fit properly so that you can stay comfortable! If your dentures or partial dentures have a loose fit, promptly see your dentist for help. On top of being very uncomfortable, loose dentures can cause irritation, infection, and sores. Seeing your dentist regularly will also keep your mouth clean and healthy!
